It’s been a long day and Teri Brent is focused on getting dinner put together. Spring storm clouds are rolling across northwest Houston, so her two grandchildren are staying inside and available to help set the table. Ta’Nia, a willowy 10-year-old, smiles as she talks about her gymnastics classes and her 8-year-old brother, Terynce, lines up napkins and looks for an opportunity to show the sequence he is learning in his martial arts class.
What are your plans after you graduate high school? Are you ready for the future?” High school upperclassmen face these questions every year. The idea of planning for a future full of unknowns can be daunting and anxiety-inducing for many teens and young adults. At Methodist Children’s Home, staff and community partners equip youth with the skills and tools they need so they can prepare for their next steps with confidence.
Kaden almost glows when he begins talking about his studies and aspirations for the future. It is with good reason; he has a great deal to be excited about. Discussing his path to becoming a college student supported by the Independent Living program (ILP) at Methodist Children’s Home, the 22-year-old takes on another look – one of deep thankfulness.
A quiet young woman with a big personality and a heart to match, D’Nayjah is ready for her next chapter in life.“ I want to give my parents a nice, custom home after I become a successful real estate agent,” the May 2022 graduate said with a smile. Rooted in her faith, the youngest sibling of six always puts her family first.
Taylor’s smile and spunk bring energy to the room as she talks about her journey to Methodist Children’s Home. She has a confidence in her voice and a hopefulness in her heart – the type of personality that leads one to believe she was always a vibrant young lady with bold ideas for a bright future. But Taylor admits she did not always have such an optimistic outlook.
