Q&A with the MCH Technology Department

Darrell Paris and Mike Baxley - MCH Technology Department

In today’s world, technology is vital to productivity, organization and communication. The role of the technology department at Methodist Children’s Home is to ensure the technology needs are met for administrative personnel, direct care staff, community services staff and residents.

The MCH online technology request system was introduced in 2007. Since the implementation in 2007, over 5,500 requests have been submitted.

Mike Baxley, director of technology (pictured right), and Darrell Paris, technology support specialist (pictured left), are responsible for responding to these requests. There are over 1, 700 devices supported by the technology department and over 81,000 feet of network cabling (15.3 miles) supporting all three campuses and the outreach offices. Mike and Darrell maintain equipment such as 345 desktop computers, 380 printers, 375 phones, 125 network devices (routers and switches), 20 servers, 12 network copiers, 15 fax machines and 35 laptops.

We caught up with Mike and Darrell to ask them a few questions about their job.

Q: What is the biggest challenge in your job?
A: Mike: Our department must carefully plan how and when to implement new technology needs while understanding and meeting each department’s specific needs.
A: Darrell: The biggest challenge for me is balancing the implementation of system-wide upgrades and the training and support they require while maintaining a level of service and support for existing users. It is also a challenge to reduce the time it takes to troubleshoot issues and provide better service.

Q: What do you most enjoy about your job?
A: Darrell: I enjoy the opportunity to connect with the staff and youth. Employees share a mission for helping children and their families. I enjoy supporting that passion by maintaining computers, mentoring youth or dressing up as Santa for Christmas parties.
A: Mike: I feel fortunate to have a career doing something I enjoy and also being part of an organization that is truly inspirational.
