Q&A with James, Waco campus resident

James, MCH resident, with Rick Shaefer, yard crew staff member

The Methodist Children’s Home Plant Department, located on the Waco campus, occasionally hires student workers to help maintain campus lawns and facilities. Part-time jobs enable youth to learn new skills and build positive relationships with staff. James, has spent the spring working with the yard crew.

We caught up with James and Rick Schaefer, yard crew staff member, to see how things were going. James (left) and Rick (right) are pictured above.

Q: What have you learned from this opportunity?
James: I am learning how to be more responsible and how to ask questions. It is just like being at a job and I am expected to be here and help get the work done. The yard crew are great guys and have been very helpful. I have enjoyed working with them.

Q: What are your future plans?
James: I graduate this June and plan on attending Texas State Technical College to earn a welding certificate. I hope to do structural welding or pipeline welding. I hope I can put everything I have learned at MCH into practice once I am on my own.

Q: What is the benefit of having a student worker?
Rick: I enjoy being around the youth who live here. It helps remind me of why we are here and what MCH ministry is about. It benefits the youth by providing a different area to build relationships and learn new skills.
