Q&A with Gloria, intern with the MCH admissions department

Gloria - Methodist Children's Home

Methodist Children’s Home offers childcare internships for undergraduate and graduate students. Since January of 2011, Gloria Fleming has been commuting from Killeen to do her internship at the Waco Campus. She has been working directly with Catie Capp-Hays, director of admissions.

Gloria works full-time at Eastern Hills Middle School in Killeen, Texas. She has been a teacher’s aide for ten years. She is also a student at Texas A&M University Central Texas in Killeen. She is working on her bachelor’s degree in social work. We visited with Gloria to see how she was enjoying her internship at Methodist Children's Home.

Q: What inspired you to go into social work?
A: I have a passion for youth, especially the underdog. Through my experiences being a teacher’s aide, I have seen students who are sometimes overlooked. I knew that I was going to have to further my own education in order to serve other than in the classroom. In my own life, I did not have someone telling me I could succeed, and I want to be that someone for our youth.

Q: What has impacted you the most while at MCH?
A: From the first time I walked through the doors of the admissions department I have felt welcomed and inspired. Catie took me under her wing and has really encouraged me and given me the tools to do my best. She told me I will need to be passionate, patient and listen. I took that to heart and practice it when working with the families and youth here.

Gloria will graduate from Texas A&M University Central Texas in May 2012. She hopes to remain in the Killeen school district and work with Communities in Schools.
